The 83rd Annual Academy Awards: predictions and picks

This Sunday brings the 83rd Annual Academy Awards, and with it, all the hype Hollywood has to muster. Here are The State Press’ predictions and picks for the night’s big winners. Catch the Oscars — hosted by Anne Hathaway and James Franco — at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27, on ABC.
Best Picture
While all of the 10 Best Picture nominees are terrific, only two of them stand a chance at winning Oscar’s top prize. For a long time it appeared that David Fincher’s “The Social Network” was bound to be declared Best Picture of the year, dominating virtually every critic award, including the Golden Globe.
Matters took an unexpected turn on Oscar nomination morning however, when “The King’s Speech” led the pack with a total of 12 nominations. Since then the film has won the Directors Guild of America, Producers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild awards.
With the most nominations and three major predecessor award wins, it’d be a safe bet to say that “The King’s Speech” will be crowned Best Picture on Oscar Sunday, but “The Social Network” could still pull an upset — which I’m rooting for. “The Social Network” is by far the more relevant, more profound, more timeless and more entertaining of the two pictures.
In recent years the Academy has been steering away from conventional Oscar winners and selecting bolder choices — “The Hurt Locker,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Crash” and “The Departed,” to name a few. This year I hope the Academy continues this streak by awarding “The Social Network” Best Picture over “The King’s Speech.”
That said, is “The Social Network” my personal selection to win Best Picture? No. As much as I love that film, my favorite movie of the year was Pixar’s “Toy Story 3.” No film released in 2010 touched or enthralled me as much as this wonderful animated feature. Alas, the odds of that happening are about as likely as Rob Schneider receiving a lifetime achievement Oscar.
What Will Win: “The King’s Speech”
My Preference: “Toy Story 3”
Best Actor
If there’s one sure bet this year, it’s that Colin Firth will win Best Actor for “The King’s Speech.” Firth completely deserves to be engraved as an Oscar-winner for his exceptional portrayal of George VI, the stammerer who would be king.
Who Will Win: Colin Firth for “The King’s Speech”
My Preference: Colin Firth for “The King’s Speech”
Best Actress
It will be a criminal injustice if Natalie Portman doesn’t win for her fearless and haunting performance in “Black Swan.” Some Oscar analysts have been predicting Annette Benning to pull an upset for her splendid work in “The Kids Are All Right.” Benning is one of our finest actresses and is overdue for an Oscar. As far as I’m concerned though, Portman delivered nothing short of the best female performance of the 21st century. If she doesn’t win, I will throw a wine cooler at my television set.
Who Will Win: Natalie Portman for “Black Swan”
My Preference: Natalie Portman for “Black Swan”
Best Supporting Actor
Christian Bale should finally diminish his underrated status by winning for his risky and energized performance in “The Fighter.” Geoffrey Rush winning his second Oscar for “The King’s Speech” isn’t out of the question though. If Rush were to win then you can pretty much count on a “The King’s Speech” sweep.
Who Will Win: Christian Bale for “The Fighter”
My Preference: Christian Bale for “The Fighter”
Best Supporting Actress
Mellissa Leo is currently the frontrunner here, winning numerous awards for her role in “The Fighter” and giving memorable acceptance speeches. But I’m going to go out on a limb and predict Hailee Steinfeld for her breakthrough performance in “True Grit.” While this may just be wishful thinking on my behalf, Steinfeld actually has a lot going for her. Among the five nominated supporting actresses, Steinfeld is the only one that truly had the leading role. Younger actresses have tended to pull upsets in this category in the past, such as Anna Paquin for “The Piano” and Tatum O’Neal in “Paper Moon.”
Who Will Win: Hailee Steinfeld for “True Grit”
My Preference: Hailee Steinfeld for “True Grit”
Best Director
Seeing how “The King’s Speech” is pretty much destined to win Best Picture, Tom Hooper has a strong chance at winning Best Director. Nevertheless, I’m predicting a split between the two categories this year with Best Director going to David Fincher for “The Social Network.” Fincher, who was previously nominated for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” is overdue for this award. In “The Social Network” he delivered what is probably his most straightforward film to date and in many ways his best.
Who Will Win: David Fincher for “The Social Network”
My Preference: David Fincher for “The Social Network”
Best Adapted Screenplay
Even if “The Social Network” doesn’t win Best Picture or Best Director, the Academy will definitely grant Best Adapted Screenplay to Aaron Sorkin for writing the freshest script of the year.
What Will Win: “The Social Network”
My Preference: “The Social Network”
Best Original Screenplay
David Seidler’s witty screenplay for “The King’s Speech” seems poised to win here. For my money though, the most original and well-crafted screenplay in this category was Christopher Nolan’s “Inception.” Nolan pulling an upset would be overly justified and make up for his second Best Director snub.
What Will Win: “The King’s Speech”
My Preference: “Inception”
Best Animated Feature
What Will Win: “Toy Story 3,” without a doubt.
My Preference: “Toy Story 3”
Best Original Song
What Will Win: “If I Rise” from “127 Hours”
My Preference: “I See the Light” from “Tangled”
Best Original Score
What Will Win: “The Social Network”
My Preference: “Inception”
Best Cinematography
What Will Win: “True Grit”
My Preference: “Inception”
Best Art Direction
What Will Win: “Alice in Wonderland,” with a strong possibility of “The King’s Speech” or “Inception” winning
My Preference: Alice in Wonderland
Best Costume Design
What Will Win: “The King’s Speech”
My Preference: “Alice in Wonderland”
Best Film Editing
What Will Win: “The Social Network”
My Preference: “The Social Network”
Best Visual Effects
What Will Win: “Inception”
My Preference: “Inception”
Best Makeup
What Will Win: “The Wolfman”
My Preference: “The Wolfman,” I guess. Anyone want to tell me why “Alice in Wonderland” wasn’t nominated here though?
Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing
What Will Win: “Inception” for both categories

Brad Pitt And Angelina 'Penniless'

The two biggest Hollywood movie stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, are having financial troubles. The couple have been found fighting for several reasons but this time it is about their finance.

Brad Pitt And Angelina Jolie reportedly have financial problems due to their habit of over spending. They spend more than they earn, that is what Brad Pitt is trying to explain Angelina Jolie. Answering to Brad Pitt's doubts, Angelina Jolie denies to believe that they are spending more. This is what has gone up to be a major reason of conflict between the two.

“Brad is demanding that they reduce household staff, scale back on travel, artwork, expensive wine, buying up the most buzzed about scripts and books in Hollywood and rein in their charitable donations. Their combined net worth is an estimated $250 million, but they’re spending more than they’re bringing in.

Brad recently fired one of his most trusted employees as well as the children’s French tutor, telling them, ‘I can’t afford you anymore.’ It’s hard to believe two of the biggest movie stars in the world need to pinch pennies. But they are facing some harsh financial realities just like millions of other families all across America," a source revealed to National Enquirer.

Angelina Jolie, however, thinks that Bard Pitt is over creating regarding the financial matters and does not approve of his measures. The fight between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie is on. Lets wait for the results.

Sonali Bendre caught in a Party without Underwear

At Four Season’s Hotel a constellation of stars assembled to celebrate a party on the night of 1st February. The party was hosted by Director Karan Johar of the Koffe with Karan fame. Stars like Aishwarya Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra to Kareena Kapoor all were present.
Amongst others was Sonali Bendre the star who won the Star Screen Award for the Best Supporting Actress in the year 2001 for her film Hamara Dil Apke Paas Hai. With a huge fan following its obvious that even the media keeps a close distance watch on where she goes and what she wears. Sonali and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan walked in together and no sooner had they walked in that Sonali became the talk of the town for her wardrobe mal-functioning.
Previous to this incident we have unmarried actresses like Neetu Chandra and Yana Gupta who have been spotted without undergarments. However Sonali Bendre’s malfunctioning of wardrobe has been disheartening for her fans.
Sonali’s most memorable film is a Marathi film directed by Amol Palekar called Anahat. Films like Duplicate, Chori Chori and Sarfarosh has earned her many fans. With Goldie Behl as husband and the Bachchans as family friends she attracts media’s attention; therefore a very slight mistake may blow out of proportion and may tarnish her image.
As for Sonali this is not for the first time that much is being written about what she wears, as this model turned actress has been in controversy in the year 1988 too. That year in the month of March she had been criticized for what she wore in the Showtime magazine. She seemed unperturbed by her clothes and the black dress she wore went into the background as the cameraman who viewed her panties missing circulated the photo which soon became a topic of discussion.
The sizzling beauty Sonali has always attracted the camera during any public appearance as they have found her to be a very well dressed and photographs of hers has always attracted the magazine buyers.
The mother of a child wife of a director and one of the top most beautiful woman of the film industry need not fish for media attention. That she did not mind being photographed and becoming the talk of the town is evident from the fact that she retorted back to the media saying “I am glad you saw it”.
More than her acting talents her looks have been appreciated. She is fully aware of this and has even commented on this saying that people should take more notice of her acting talents than her looks. Unnecessary media coverage to gain attention is not what her fans would have expected. However much she may try; people are going to remember her black dress appearance for a party with the panties missing.
After staying with the Hindi film industry for a considerable time and having starred in so many different films it does not seem that this actress had purposefully dressed in a manner to draw media attention. However a mistake like this will never go unnoticed and might even contribute to tar the image of a personality. On the other hand on the very next day she was seen in a beautiful saree well dressed going for some award function. This pretty actress did look gorgeous and did attract the camera men once again.

Top 5 Ever Best Romantic Movies of Bollywood!

Love has been the pulse of Hindi cinema since its inception. Celebrating love in Bollywood style is unique and is revered all around the world. Beautiful backdrops, vivacious song and dance and emotion drenched dialogues have been the ‘apple of the eye’ for the Bolly industry. Romantic films like Raj Kapoor’s ‘Awaara’ and Guru Dutt’s ‘Kaagaz ke Phool’ laid the stepping stones in the black and white era that was followed through decades by films and film makers. The canvas of Hindi films seems incomplete without the color of romance.

 5. Maine Pyar Kiya

Among the five evergreen movies that have instilled the audience to ‘fall in love’, the fifth position goes to Sooraj Barjatiya’s romantic flick ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ that rocked the nation in 1989. Not only did it set the launch pad for Salman Khan but also encrypt itself into memories of romance that is almost unforgettable. The young duo of Prem and Suman (played by Salman and Bhagyasree) and their struggle for a happy reunion allured teenagers all across the country. The film received many acclaims including a Filmfare for Best film and Best Music,

4. Kaagaz ke Phool
The fourth position is held by Guru Dutt’s love saga ‘Kaagaz ke Phool’ that is rumoured to portray Dutt’s increasing distance with his wife singer Geeta Dutt that was initiated by his alluring affection for Waheeda Rahman. The film is an epic and was ranked at 160 among greatest films of all times. The film has memorable music by legend S D Burman and artists like Geeta Dutt and Mohammad Rafi had lent their vocals for the songs.

 3. Devdas

The third position goes to ‘Devdas’ that is based on a novel by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. The plot of the film revolves around the rich Devdas and the poor Parvati. How societal taboos set the lovers apart and ruined their lives forever is what the story is all about. The film has been made in different Indian languages so far. Though the first filmy version ofDevdas was made in 1927, the Dilip Kumar starrer of 1955 still tops the chart. Bengali actress Suchitra Sen played the role of Paro while the role of courtesan Chandramukhi was enacted by Vyjantimala. Devdas has managed to sway the audience with emotions every time the film has hit the silver screen.

2. Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge

The Shahrukh Khan-Kajol starrer ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge’ or popularly known as DDLJ is on position two. Raj and Simran managed to break all records at the box office as they toured all across Europe spinning a love story that has captured minds forever. Yash Chopra’s son Aditya Chopra debuted as a director with DDLJ in 1995. The film bagged 10 awards that year including a National award for the most popular film of the year. A movie hall in Mumbai is still holding shows of DDLJ…….what more does the film need to be a star!.

 1. Mughal-e-Azam

The film that has topped charts forever since it was made is K.Asif’s ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ that was released in 1960 for the first time. The epic love story between Prince Salim (played by Dilip Kumar) and a court dancer Anarkali (played by Madhubala) has been an inspiration for lovers through time. It not only broke innumerable records in terms of lavish technology and art used in the film but also for its brilliant music and songs that are hummed till today. The brilliantly scripted dialogues of the film were awarded with Filmfare that year. Naushad’s ‘Pyar Kiya to Darna Kya’ became the anthem for lovers all across the globe.
Bollywood’s celebration of love and romance is eternal and continues till today……..not only with every new film that is made……but essentially in every movie lover’s heart!

James Franco joins Facebook and Twitter

Hollywood star James Franco is the latest celebrity to go online. The '127 Hours' star has joined the Twitter and Facebook.

The actor, who will host the Oscars this year, joined both social networking services days ago, and now boasts over 112,000 followers on Twitter.

"Join the club," he said yesterday via Twitter, referencing a photo he posted on what looks like a private jet where someone is holding up a sign that says "Mile High Club."

The 'Milk' star is also making plenty of friends on Twitter, despite a limited number of tweets, thanking Steve Martin Sunday who tweeted to Franco: "Have a great Oscars, James."

Asked if he had cold feet regarding his forthcoming co-hosting gig, Franco could only manage: "No...whatever," the Hollywood Reporter said.

The actor was more ready to talk about his past and how he got started as an actor.

"I left school when I was 19. I took a shot at acting ... The chances were slim, but because I took that chance it allowed me resources that would enable me.

"I feel grateful...I really have had a good life," the actor added Saturday night.

Teen Idol Justin Bieber Causes Riot at Long Island Mall

Justin Bieber

Who is Justin Bieber? Well, that was the first question on my mind when I heard that a crowd of 3,000 people had flipped the eff out over him at Garden City, Long Island’s Roosevelt Field Mall. Anyway, it’s turns out he’s this 15-year-old teen pop star, in what I believe to be the Aaron Carter mode. And, when it comes to hormonal tween girls, you know what that means. Riot!!!

And when I say there was a riot, I mean some shit seriously went down: Five people were hospitalized with minor injuries, and one person was arrested. Meanwhile, Island Def Jam VP James Roppo “was charged with endangering the welfare of children and obstructing governmental administration for refusing to send a Twitter message asking the crowd to disperse,” despite the fact that Bieber’s label later released a statement apologizing to fans. Well, that’s a new crime for our new technology-driven world. But I’m guessing that if the publicity helps sell Bieber’s album, My World, which comes out this week, then Roppo won’t be too broken up about spending a night or two in the clink.
